Representatives from major steel corporations that are ISNetworld members met at the company’s headquarters in Dallas, Texas last month at ISN’s First Annual Steel Client Roundtable to discuss best practices and approaches to the contractor pre-qualification process. The event touched on several key elements outlined in ISN’s widely-read “What is Best-in-Class Contractor Management?” white paper.
The steel industry is a key driver in the global economy, directly employing more than two million people worldwide. Another six million contractor and full-time jobs in supporting industries depend on the production, shipping and manufacturing of steel.
The Roundtable offered an ideal opportunity for more than 40 individuals from companies such as U.S. Steel, Gallatin Steel and Nucor Steel to share ideas, current approaches and concerns regarding contractor management. Discussions included implementing a risk-based approach to contractor management and the best approach to help contractors remain compliant. Other topics included ways to track employee training within ISNetworld and how to maximize their subscription to improve existing subcontractor management processes.
“The conference was really led by the participants of all the Steel Companies. It was great to see them all share the same end goal of contractor safety and collectively work together to make improvements in the industry as a whole,” said Kim Holly, Senior Manager at ISN. “Based on the robust involvement of the group, I’m certain the Steel Client Roundtable will become an annual event.”
The event proved that collaboration is the most effective way to improve industry best practices. After sharing with and hearing from other experts in their industry, attendees of the Roundtable left the event with new approaches and concepts to bring back to their organizations. Several steel companies held internal breakout sessions after the event to share ideas.
Details on the next Steel Roundtable will be announced in early 2014. Until then, a list of ISN meetings and upcoming industry events is available on www.isnetworld.com.
